“Exciting Reveals for Toronto Film Festival’s Primetime: Netflix’s ‘All the Light We Cannot See,’ Amazon’s ‘Expats’ with Nicole Kidman, and Ron Leshem’s ‘Bad Boy’ Among World Premieres
The Toronto Film Festival’s Primetime program unveiled a stellar lineup of world premieres, showcasing the convergence of cinema and television. Among the spotlighted productions are Netflix’s limited series ‘All the Light We Cannot See,’ featuring Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie, and Amazon’s ‘Expats,’ a drama led by Nicole Kidman and Sarayu Blue, centering on a group of expatriate women in Hong Kong. The Primetime selection also introduces Ron Leshem’s Hebrew-language drama ‘Bad Boy.’
Adding to the excitement, TIFF is presenting a North American TV premiere for Paramount+’s ‘Bargain,’ a Korean survival thriller involving an underground auction house for human organ trafficking amidst an earthquake. This marks a significant expansion in the Primetime roster, reflecting the growing global appetite for serialized storytelling.
The evolving landscape of international TV series is captivating audiences worldwide, with foreign language subtitles proving less of a barrier thanks to hits like ‘Money Heist’ and ‘Call My Agent.’ Primetime programmer Geoff Macnaughton noted how streaming platforms have amplified the acceptance of diverse narratives and languages, emphasizing the emergence of foreign language success stories.
This year, TIFF’s Primetime section boasts nine series, up from seven in the previous edition. The roster showcases the burgeoning diversity in narratives and styles, encompassing Korean dystopian thrillers, Canadian docuseries on the Black experience, and indigenous stories of revival.
The Primetime selections will illuminate the festival from September 7 to 17, capturing the vibrant spectrum of modern storytelling and its fusion with cinema.”
