Steve Martin has responded to allegations made by Miriam Margolyes in her memoir, where she claimed that he hit her during the filming of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. In a statement issued to The Hollywood Reporter, Martin expressed surprise at Margolyes’ account, stating that he remembers their scene as a good communication between professional actors. He vehemently denies any harm caused to Margolyes or any negligence during the stunts, emphasizing that he took extreme caution during the fake punch, just as he would in any similar scene.
Martin further clarified that there was never any physical contact between him and Margolyes, accidental or intentional, not just in this scene but throughout the entire filming. Director Frank Oz also added his support to Martin, stating that he always rehearses physical actions in slow motion and that Margolyes’ claims are puzzling and not reflective of the Steve Martin he knows.
In her memoir, ‘Oh Miriam! Stories From an Extraordinary Life’, Margolyes wrote about being repeatedly hit, punched, slapped, and knocked down by Martin throughout the day. She described him as brilliant but horrid towards her. In the film, Margolyes played a dental assistant to Martin’s character and during the song ‘Dentist!’, her character is punched and a door is slammed in her face.
