Nearly a year after embracing motherhood, Riley Keough is peeling back the curtain on her decision to welcome her first child, daughter Tupelo Storm, through surrogacy. Keough, 34, candidly discussed her choice in a feature for Vanity Fair’s September 2022 cover story, published on August 8. The actress, who has openly battled Lyme disease, explained that due to her autoimmune condition, surrogacy felt like the most suitable option for her.
Riley Keough, along with her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, discreetly became parents to a baby girl, as confirmed by Us Weekly in January. The couple, who got engaged in 2014 and married the following year, has kept their journey to parenthood mostly under wraps. Keough shared her experience of becoming a mother in an Interview magazine feature earlier this year, marking her first public acknowledgment of her new role.
In her conversation with Vanity Fair, Keough illuminated her perspective on surrogacy, commending the selflessness of the women who choose this path to assist others. The star of “Daisy Jones & the Six” also provided insight into the significance of her daughter’s name. Tupelo, a reference to her grandfather Elvis Presley’s birthplace, was initially chosen with a personal connection in mind. Further layers of meaning were interwoven into her daughter’s name, as Keough honored her late brother, Benjamin Storm, who tragically passed away in 2020. The middle name Storm pays homage to his memory.
