Broadway Revival of “Funny Girl” Triumphs Financially Despite Casting Shake-Up
In a surprising turn of events, the Broadway revival of “Funny Girl” has managed to recoup its $16.5 million capitalization, as confirmed by producers in an announcement today. The production, which has been a rollercoaster of casting choices and critical reception, has defied the odds and emerged as a box office success.
Originally opening in April 2022 at the renowned August Wilson Theatre, the musical starred Beanie Feldstein as Fanny Brice. While Feldstein initially attracted a fervent fanbase and drove ticket sales, critics and Tony Award nominators were less impressed, leading to a decline in the show’s popularity. A pivotal moment occurred when Feldstein departed from the production, a departure that played out in the public eye. In a bold move, Glee sensation Lea Michele stepped into the title role, wielding her own legion of dedicated fans and earning rave reviews from critics. The effect was dramatic—box office revenues soared.
Remarkably, “Funny Girl” started shattering box office records at the August Wilson Theatre. In January 2023, the show achieved a momentous milestone, setting a new weekly record with an astonishing gross of $2,062,739. This marked the highest weekly earnings ever recorded at the venue for an eight-performance week. The momentum continued, as the production went on to break its own records, achieving a staggering gross of $2,405,901.00 for the nine-performance week ending January 1, 2023. The previous house record, held by “Mean Girls” since 2018, was decisively surpassed. It’s worth noting that these house records account for both increased attendance and higher ticket prices.
Presently, the revival stars Lea Michele, Ramin Karimloo, who has been an integral part of the production since its inception, along with Jared Grimes and Tovah Feldshuh.
The chapter of “Funny Girl” on Broadway is drawing to a close, with Lea Michele’s departure set for Sunday, September 3. As the show concludes its run, it will have amassed an impressive tally of 599 performances and 30 previews on the Great White Way. Fans eager to catch Michele’s stellar performance have only 25 more opportunities to do so.
Behind the scenes, the revival’s success is attributed to a coalition of producers including Sonia Friedman Productions, Scott Landis, David Babani, Roy Furman, No Guarantees, Adam Blanshay Productions, and more. Their collective efforts have turned “Funny Girl” into a financial triumph, defying the odds and solidifying its place in Broadway history.
