Catherine, Princess of Wales, has expressed her excitement about being in France for the Rugby World Cup. As the patron of England’s Rugby Football Union, the 41-year-old royal attended her team’s opening group game against Argentina, where they secured a 27-10 victory on September 9. After the match, Catherine visited the players in the dressing room.
Prior to the game, Catherine was greeted by RFU president Rob Briers, France 2023 chairman Jacques Rivoal, and World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont. She then took her seat in the presidential box at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. In a conversation with former England captain Bill, the Princess of Wales expressed her excitement about being at the event, while lamenting the short duration of her visit. Bill acknowledged the busy weeks leading up to the tournament, and Catherine expressed her confidence in the tournament being excellent.
England Rugby later shared a video of Catherine speaking to player George Ford in the dressing room after the match. The Princess of Wales asked him about his drop goal practice, to which he blushed and laughed, while his teammates praised his skills. The organization thanked Catherine for her support and described her as a special visitor in their post.
Catherine took over the rugby patronage when Prince Harry stepped back from his royal duties. On ‘The Good The Bad and The Rugby’ podcast, she admitted finding it intimidating to visit the dressing room after matches. However, she expressed her love for seeing the behind-the-scenes of any organization and witnessing the collaboration of many people.
