Patricia Arquette’s directorial debut is a new movie called ‘Gonzo Girl,’ which is inspired by Hunter S Thompson. Thompson, the legendary writer, passed away in 2005 at the age of 67. Arquette revealed in an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff that she has always loved Thompson and his spirit. Although the movie is fiction and based on Cheryl Della Prieta’s novel, it incorporates the essence of Thompson and his world.
‘Gonzo Girl’ focuses on a young woman navigating life after college. It explores various themes such as drugs, sex, rock and roll, creativity, writer’s block, addiction, co-dependency, and the idea of beauty as currency. Arquette described the movie as a mix between a ‘90s and ‘60s/‘70s world, bringing together different eras and experiences.
Arquette emphasized the fun and excitement of this young woman’s coming-of-age journey, but also highlighted the darker side when things take a turn for the worse. The actress-turned-director mentioned the ugliness that comes after crashing and burning.
