Breaking News: Paramount’s Republic Pictures Secures Global Rights to Uplifting Ballet Documentary ‘Lift,’ Created by Oscar Nominee David Petersen
Prepare to be inspired as Paramount’s Republic Pictures takes the helm of the compelling documentary ‘Lift,’ masterminded by acclaimed filmmaker David Petersen, known for his Academy Award-nominated work. The film is set to make its worldwide debut through Paramount Global Content Distribution. Stateside audiences can look forward to experiencing the film’s magic in select theaters from September 15th, followed by a digital release on the 22nd. Across the pond, the UK premiere is scheduled for digital platforms on the 25th.
Guided by the renowned Misty Copeland, a trailblazing ballerina and Principal Advisor, ‘Lift’ takes center stage, spotlighting the transformative potential of dance while unearthing the hidden narrative of homelessness in America. Through the journeys of young, ballet-loving individuals grappling with housing instability and their dedicated mentor at the New York Theatre Ballet, the documentary unravels a tale of resilience, joy, and triumph in the face of adversity.
Produced in collaboration with Vulcan Productions and Beaufort 9 Films, and with support from JustFilms | Ford Foundation and Catapult Film Fund, ‘Lift’ made its grand debut at the Tribeca Festival last year. It has since garnered recognition, clinching the title of Best Documentary at The San Francisco Dance Film Festival and the Shine Global Children’s Resilience in Film Award. The film also graced the Palm Springs Film Festival’s esteemed Best of Fest lineup.
Behind the scenes, Mary Recine and David Petersen orchestrate the documentary’s production, while an ensemble of distinguished names contributes as executive producers. Misty Copeland’s involvement is paramount, alongside luminaries such as Jody Allen, Ruth Johnson, Rocky Collins, Sam Pollard, Jannat Gargi, Lisa Kleiner Chanoff, Bonni Cohen, Megan Gelstein, Jenny Lumet, Alex Kurtzman, and Bruce Evans from Paramount/CBS 25 Stories. Co-executive producer Leyla Fayyaz further enriches the film’s creative tapestry.
Misty Copeland, reflecting on the documentary’s profound impact, shared, “LIFT demonstrates the power and importance of dance. The beauty and complexity in each of the stories told show that hope, resilience, and dance can be the lifeblood that saves lives.”
For David Petersen, the journey to bring ‘Lift’ to life spanned a decade, a testament to the dedication and passion poured into the project. “Following the challenges and hopes of these incredible kids and their mentor, Steven Melendez, took almost 11 years,” he shared. “But the rewards of seeing how they transformed a classical art form to tell their own story was worth every minute.”
Get ready to witness the breathtaking fusion of art and human spirit when ‘Lift’ graces screens worldwide, offering an unmissable tale of empowerment, transformation, and the boundless potential of the human soul.
