Tom Cruise is soaring in the latest installment of ‘Mission: Impossible,’ but the film itself is currently experiencing a somewhat lackluster performance at the box office, at least based on current projections.
Tom Cruise ‘Dead Reckoning’ Faces Challenges
Early ticket sales numbers have been tallied, and ‘Dead Reckoning: Part One’ is expected to earn approximately $78 million domestically during its five-day run. The movie was released earlier this week, with full screenings starting on Tuesday.
The issue with this figure, if it holds true through the weekend, is that early estimates had ‘M:I 7’ pegged for a much higher opening amount of around $90 million in North America.
While the film’s early global box office earnings have helped push ‘Dead Reckoning’ to a projected total opening of about $122 million so far, it still falls significantly short of its reported budget of $290 million for just Part 1. At this rate, the film will need to display the staying power of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ to recoup its costs, let alone generate a profit.
Meanwhile, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ are waiting in the wings, both scheduled for release next week and likely to overshadow ‘M:I 7.’ ‘Barbie,’ in particular, is expected to lead the pack among the three films, with a projected domestic opening of $93 million.
Considering the extensive marketing efforts behind ‘Barbie,’ it is reasonable to expect that it will come close to reaching this figure, not to mention the potential success of ‘Oppenheimer.’
This summer boasts an impressive lineup of movies to enjoy in theaters.
Congratulations to Harrison Ford on 40 years of Indiana Jones and one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history.
Overall, this news seems unfavorable for Tom Cruise and the team behind ‘Dead Reckoning: Part One,’ assuming the projected figures hold true. Ironically, Tom has been embracing the summer blockbusters, encouraging moviegoers to see all the big films hitting theaters, even those in direct competition with his own. This public support comes in contrast to reports suggesting he was upset behind the scenes.
The irony lies in the fact that Tom is a staunch advocate for the theatrical movie experience and has repeatedly expressed that it is his ultimate goal as he continues his legacy.
However, if his advocacy comes at the expense of his own flagship film, perhaps a different conversation should be had. Nevertheless, ‘Dead Reckoning: Part One’ is currently playing in theaters, and Tom will have another opportunity next year with ‘Part Two.’ According to all accounts, the action-packed film is a knockout and immensely entertaining.
