Clarity on Oprah Winfrey’s Maui Shelter Visit Situation
Recent reports suggested that Oprah Winfrey faced entry denial at a Maui shelter for wildfire survivors. However, local officials are addressing the matter to provide accurate context.
Last week, there were claims that Oprah arrived at the War Memorial Gymnasium in Wailuku accompanied by a CBS News crew. According to initial reports, she was initially not permitted entry and only gained access after instructing the camera operators to wait outside. The County of Maui took to Facebook on Sunday to clarify the situation, stating, ‘To clarify, Oprah was able to visit our shelter and we thank her for instructing media journalists and camera crews to remain outside.’
In essence, Oprah’s experience was not unique; she received the same treatment as all media personnel who arrived at the shelters. The County further elaborated, ‘Her visit inside the shelter today was truly heartwarming and we appreciate her understanding of our policy of having no camera crews or reporters accompanying dignitaries and celebrities in our emergency shelters.’
