Paramount+ has another ratings hit on its hands with the espionage thriller Special Ops: Lioness, which premiered with a bang on July 23. The series has already broken records as Paramount Global proudly declares it the streamer’s most-watched global series premiere in its first 24 hours, surpassing the previous record set by Halo in March 2022.
The show’s success extends beyond Paramount+. The first two episodes also aired on Paramount Network over the last two weekends, with Episode 1 coinciding with the series’ streaming debut and Episode 2 airing on July 30. However, to catch the remaining episodes, fans will need to stick with Paramount+.
After three days of delayed viewing, Episode 1 managed to amass nearly 6 million viewers across Paramount+ globally and linear viewing on Paramount Network in the U.S., according to Paramount Global. Samba TV reported 918,000 U.S. households tuned in to Episode 1 on Paramount+ on its release day, while 218,000 watched Episode 2.
Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of Paramount Media Networks & Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, expressed excitement over the show’s success, stating, “On one of the most competitive weeks of the year, Special Ops: Lioness scored as the #1 new scripted series of the year on cable and one of the highest performers of all time on Paramount+. Brilliantly created by Taylor Sheridan and brought to life by our stellar cast, this heart-pounding thriller inspired by real-life events clearly struck a chord with a huge audience.”
Domenic DiMeglio, EVP and Chief Marketing Officer at Paramount Streaming, echoed the sentiment, saying, “The strong viewer reception for Special Ops: Lioness reflects the power of Paramount across the board in creating, producing, marketing, and delivering this incredible Taylor Sheridan drama with broad global appeal. We can’t wait for viewers to come along with us on this high stakes thrill ride.”
Special Ops: Lioness follows the successful airing of Paramount+ original series 1883 on Paramount Network and CMT, which attracted 2.2 million viewers, a season high for the Taylor Sheridan series.
Inspired by a real U.S. military program, the new Sheridan drama revolves around Joe (played by Zoe Saldaña) as she navigates the complexities of her personal and professional life as a crucial part of the CIA’s war on terror. Operating undercover alongside Joe is Marine Raider Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira), enlisted in the Lioness Program overseen by Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Donald Westfield (Michael Kelly) to tackle state terrorism and prevent another 9/11 attack.
The star-studded cast also includes Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, Stephanie Nur, and Hannah Love Lanier. The series boasts an impressive roster of executive producers, including Sheridan, David C. Glasser, Saldaña, Kidman, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Wagner, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Malone, and John Hillcoat.
Special Ops: Lioness is a production of MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios for Paramount+. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution outside of Paramount+ markets.
David C. Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, expressed his delight with the audience’s response, remarking, “We are thrilled audiences have discovered the power of Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, and Laysla De Oliveira. These three incredible actors delivered and make Lioness an action-packed, dramatic joy-ride week after week.”
