Clarence Avant, affectionately known as the ‘Godfather of Black’ music and entertainment, has peacefully passed away at the age of 92, as confirmed by his family. The announcement, delivered with a heavy heart, was shared by his family, including Ted Sarandos, Netflix Co-CEO and son-in-law, who revealed that Avant left this world gently at his Los Angeles residence.

Celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions in the realms of music, entertainment, politics, and sports, Avant’s revolutionary business acumen earned him the moniker ‘the Black Godfather.’ His legacy will continue to shape the world for generations to come. The warmth of his impact offers solace amidst the sorrow of his departure.

A trailblazing music executive, film producer, and entrepreneur, Avant’s journey was depicted in the 2019 Netflix feature ‘The Black Godfather,’ directed by Reginald Hudlin. This production earned acclaim and even an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, written by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.

Born in North Carolina in 1931 as the eldest of eight siblings, Avant ventured into the music industry in the 1950s, managing several successful artists, including Little Willie John. His journey led him to Venture Records, and in 1971, he established Avant Garde Broadcasting. Later, he acquired the first African-American owned FM Radio station in metropolitan LA during the 1970s.

Across his illustrious career, Avant received numerous accolades, including a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2016 and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognition in 2021. The latter occasion was marked by a video tribute featuring Barack Obama and Kamala Harris.

In 1967, Avant married Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Alberta Gray, with whom he had two children. His eldest daughter, Nicole Avant, went on to become a former U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas and the wife of Netflix leader Ted Sarandos.”
