Kristin Davis, the Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, recently visited Chisinau, Moldova, to meet Ukrainian refugees affected by the ongoing war. She expressed being deeply moved by their strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
Davis highlighted the fact that no one ever plans to become a refugee, but despite the heart-wrenching experience of leaving their homes and loved ones, many are rebuilding their lives in Moldova. She praised the Moldovan people for their kindness, compassion, and support towards the refugees.
During her visit, Davis explored the support structures available to vulnerable groups in Moldova, including refugee women working at a community center. These women not only found hope away from home but are also actively supporting the local Moldovan population.
The UNHCR representative in Moldova, Francesca Bonelli, commended the Ukrainian refugees for their resilience and the Moldovan people for their open-heartedness and solidarity. Bonelli expressed gratitude to Davis for her visit, as it helps raise awareness about the strength and unity displayed by both Moldovans and refugees.
In the aftermath of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, more than six million refugees have fled to neighboring countries and beyond. Moldova, in particular, has received over 905,000 refugees and third-country nationals, with approximately 117,000 choosing to stay in the country, mainly women and children.
