Kiran Rao is known for being outspoken about the film industry, and recently she spoke about films with ‘regressive’ messaging that are making a lot of money at the box office. This comes after Naseeruddin Shah expressed his concern about films like The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story, and Gadar 2 earning millions at the box office and leaving an impact.
During an interaction with Film Companion, Kiran Rao shared her views without specifically mentioning any film or filmmaker. She mentioned that filmmakers usually aim to make good films with good intentions, but the market has changed. The audience now has more options, and when a film with regressive messaging earns a lot of money, it hurts because there was an opportunity to make a positive impact.
Kiran Rao acknowledged that every filmmaker has their own goals and will do what they feel is right. However, she expressed her hope that big films, which are popular among audiences and make a lot of money, would also contribute to society in a positive way by breaking down stereotypes and opening up important conversations.
She clarified that she is not saying that all big films are not good, but it would be great to see more success for films with better messaging. However, she also acknowledged that films are not necessarily meant for social change.
Gadar 2, The Kerala Story, and The Kashmir Files have been performing well at the box office, with Gadar 2 collecting over 516 crores, The Kerala Story earning 242.20 crores, and The Kashmir Files grossing around 326.95 crores.
