Kevin Costner has accused his estranged wife of launching a “relentless jihad” against his character, according to documents filed by his lawyers. Costner’s ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner, filed for divorce earlier this year, citing circumstances beyond his control as the reason for their split. In response, Costner’s lawyers claim that Baumgartner is making false claims in her case, specifically regarding child support.
Costner’s attorneys argue that Baumgartner falsely claims he refuses to pay child support that meets their children’s reasonable needs. They assert that the disagreement between the parties revolves around different interpretations of “reasonable needs” in the context of child support. They describe Baumgartner’s actions as an “attack” and a “smokescreen” intended to distract from the main issue.
Last Friday, the judge ruled that Costner will pay Baumgartner $63,209 per month in child support, instead of the $161,592 originally requested. Additionally, the judge ordered Baumgartner to cover $14,000 of Costner’s legal costs incurred while trying to understand their prenuptial agreement.
In a previous filing, Costner’s attorneys requested the court to compel Baumgartner to respond to their questions regarding the prenuptial agreement. They claimed that she was refusing to disclose her contentions and her objections were frivolous. The total legal fees accrued during this process amounted to $14,237.50.
During the court hearing, Costner expressed his concern that he could be ordered to pay child support beyond what is necessary for his children and for Baumgartner’s needs. The former couple is scheduled to return to court in December to determine the validity of their premarital agreement.
