Italian Film Mogul Aims High with $55 Million Tuscany Film Studio Complex
Andrea Iervolino, the accomplished Italian film producer known for projects such as the Oscar-nominated “Tell It Like a Woman” and the upcoming Michael Mann-helmed Ferrari biopic, is embarking on an ambitious venture to establish a cutting-edge film studio complex in the picturesque region of Tuscany.
Named the Tuscany Film Studios, this visionary $55 million (€50 million) project is set to find its home outside the charming city of Florence, with potential operations commencing as early as the fall of 2024.
Iervolino enthusiastically shared his vision, stating, “My idea is simple—to create an avant-garde film hub in one of the world’s most breathtaking locations, attracting stars eager to partake in productions. Over dinner in Rome, I mentioned this project to James Franco, and he exclaimed, ‘I would come to shoot there tomorrow!'”
Italy’s entertainment industry is currently experiencing a surge in production activity, spurred by the nation’s attractive 40 percent tax incentive for international shoots and the consistent support from the Italian government towards the renowned state-owned Rome studio Cinecittà. Michael Mann’s upcoming Ferrari biopic, featuring stars like Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz, was filmed at Cinecittà. Notably, independent producers are capitalizing on this momentum by expanding Italy’s production capabilities. Tarak Ben Ammar, the owner of prominent Italian indie distributor Eagle Pictures, has recently announced plans to establish his own $50 million-plus studio complex outside Rome.
Iervolino’s visionary blueprint encompasses the creation of a multifaceted backlot equipped with traditional sound stages as well as those tailored for virtual reality. This studio will stand as Italy’s largest VR studio complex, supporting the innovative realms of 360-degree production and immersive reality. Iervolino emphasized, “360-degree cinema is the future’s great frontier.” The studio’s extensive library of global backgrounds and scenery will eliminate the need for elaborate international shoots, as even immersive reality scenes set in distant locales can be realized within the studio’s versatile setup.
Beyond its technological prowess, Tuscany Film Studios is envisioned to include a public movie theater, production offices, and an adjoining hotel. The luxurious resort-style hotel aims to accommodate actors participating in studio productions, while simultaneously welcoming private clientele. Iervolino also envisions fostering a blend of quality tourism and film production by organizing tours of the enchanting surrounding areas and local wineries.
Supported by billionaire heiress Monika Bacardi, Iervolino has cultivated an array of media companies, including AMBI Media Group, Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment, TaTaTu, and Space 11—a production entity collaborating with experts from Elon Musk’s SpaceX to craft outer space projects. Alongside the much-anticipated Ferrari biopic, Iervolino has also made his mark with productions like “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” and is actively developing another racing legend’s story, “Maserati: A Racing Life.” In a demonstration of his diverse ventures, Iervolino acquired a stake in the Miami FC, a U.S. professional soccer team, in May.
