Warner Bros has experienced a tumultuous journey in recent years, not only with its DC wing but also with several other popular intellectual properties (IPs) it possesses. While the present may offer many opportunities, it may not be the best. The constant question posed to the studio is what they plan to do with the Harry Potter franchise. Surprisingly, even they are dissatisfied with how they have neglected their two biggest IPs for a decade, according to Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav.
For those unfamiliar, the Harry Potter franchise began more than two decades ago and concluded with the release of its last film in 2011. Throughout its run, the franchise generated $7.7 billion at the Box Office, establishing the foundation on which the studio stands today. A similar fate befell the Lord of the Rings series, as the studio never revisited it after the release of the iconic trilogy.
Moving forward, Warner Bros aims to revive the Harry Potter franchise with a series, seeking redemption after the disappointment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. David Zaslav recognizes that the studio hasn’t fully utilized these IPs and regrets putting them on the back burner for a decade. He believes that there is significant shareholder value in developing a 10-year plan for DC, bringing Harry Potter back to HBO for ten consecutive years, and producing multiple Lord of the Rings movies. Zaslav emphasizes the need to invest their best capital and work with the best creative minds in order to make the studio the best-performing in the world.
