Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys icon, has been open about his struggles with drug addiction and mental health issues. At 81 years old, Wilson suffers from schizoaffective disorder and mild bipolar disorder, which he developed during his time using drugs. When Wilson was 22 years old, he started experiencing hallucinations, just a week after he began using psychedelics in early-1965.
In Bernie Taupin’s memoir, “Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton and Me,” he recalls an event where he introduced Wilson to John Lennon at a celebrity party in the US. Taupin describes the atmosphere as typically Hollywood, with celebrities and beautiful people mingling, while making efforts to appear unimpressed by the presence of notable figures like Lennon and David Bowie.
During the event, Wilson approached Taupin and expressed a strong desire to meet Lennon. Although Taupin had met Wilson a few times before and considered him a lovely man, he was aware of Wilson’s struggles with drugs and mental health at that time. Despite his reservations, Taupin agreed to introduce Wilson to Lennon.
After the initial introduction, Wilson approached Taupin two more times, insisting on meeting Lennon again. Taupin, although surprised, remained unfazed and facilitated the introductions. Each time, Lennon reacted calmly and engaged in polite conversation.
Recognizing the pattern, Taupin declined to introduce Wilson to Lennon again when approached for a fourth time. Instead, Taupin and Wilson left the event to avoid any further awkward encounters. Taupin’s decision stemmed from concern and a desire to protect Wilson.
