Barbie Continues to Dance Towards Global Box Office Success
Greta Gerwig’s directorial venture, “Barbie,” distributed by Warner Bros., has surpassed all expectations and is taking the box office by storm. In its second weekend, the film raked in an impressive $131.5 million worldwide, with $93 million coming from domestic ticket sales and $122.2 million from 70 international markets.
The movie’s domestic total has now reached $351.4 million, while overseas earnings have soared to a remarkable $423.1 million, bringing its global haul to an astounding $774.5 million in just 12 days since its release. At this remarkable pace, the female-led blockbuster, starring Margot Robbie and inspired by Mattel’s iconic fashion doll, is well on its way to joining the exclusive billion-dollar club at the global box office. In fact, it could achieve this milestone as early as the next weekend or shortly thereafter.
Notably, “Barbie” will become the first solo-directed Hollywood film by a woman to cross the $1 billion mark, surpassing Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman,” which earned $822 million (not adjusted for inflation). Furthermore, it will be the second film of 2023 to reach this remarkable milestone after Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed a staggering $1.34 billion.
Despite detractors’ predictions of a sharp decline in its second weekend, “Barbie” proved them wrong by experiencing only a 43 percent drop in North America and an even smaller decline of 32 percent in international markets.
One of the most surprising success stories for “Barbie” has been in China, where it has amassed $25 million in box office earnings. Its performance has far exceeded expectations, considering the fashion doll’s appeal in Asian markets. The unexpected success in China has raised hopes that the film’s popularity will carry over to Japan, where it is set to open next month.
Leading the charge among all markets is the U.K., where “Barbie” has already reached $61.6 million, surpassing the first 10 days of the final Harry Potter film. Moreover, it has become Warner Bros.’ biggest movie ever in Brazil, grossing an impressive $33.5 million in the country.
“Barbie” has proven to be Warner Bros.’ second-highest-grossing film of all time in the regional box office, trailing only behind “Joker” and surpassing blockbusters such as the final Harry Potter film, “Batman v. Superman,” and “Aquaman.” The film’s success is also evident in Europe, where it experienced only a 22 percent decline in ticket sales.
In conjunction with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which is being referred to as the “Barbenheimer effect,” the summer box office is thriving. Universal’s “Oppenheimer” enjoyed a successful second weekend, witnessing only a 44 percent drop in North America, grossing $46.2 million and becoming the biggest second weekend ever for an R-rated film, surpassing “Deadpool 2.” Its domestic total now stands at $174.6 million, while overseas earnings amount to $226.3 million, resulting in a global total of $400.4 million, making it Nolan’s sixth highest-grossing film to date.
