The BTS clip showcases Durran collaborating with Gerwig and the ensemble cast of Barbies in Barbie Land. It also features various sketches that eventually transformed into the characters’ final costumes in the film. Gosling highlighted the importance of costumes in the movie, stating that being appropriately dressed is essential. He even mentioned a meme circulating that praises the film’s costume designer with a free pass to heaven.
In the clip, Durran further explained the deliberate design choices made for each Barbie’s costume to distinguish them from the human characters in the movie. According to her, Barbies are always dressed with a clear purpose, setting them apart from humans. Gerwig added that incorporating big details like buttons, earrings, and necklaces contributed to achieving a doll-like appearance.
Durran, an Oscar-winning costume designer for films like ‘Anna Karenina’ and Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’, worked closely with each actress portraying Barbie to develop a unique look for their character. She emphasized that each person’s input was crucial in representing their character and themselves as women.
