The DC Universe has been experiencing a series of changes and challenges. One of the biggest controversies surrounding Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is the inclusion of Amber Heard, despite her loss in the court battle against her ex-husband Johnny Depp. Director James Wan has now shared his thoughts on the matter and clarified the role of Heard in Aquaman 2.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Wan discussed how the sequel will focus more on the relationship between Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and Patrick Wilson’s Ocean Master. He stated that the first film was centered around the romance between Arthur and Mera, but the second film will focus on the bromance between Arthur and Orm. Wan emphasized that this shift in focus was always part of his plan for the franchise.
Wan also acknowledged the impact of the Amber Heard-Johnny Depp trial and the changes within the DC Universe on the production of Aquaman 2. He compared the situation to living in a house undergoing renovation, where it’s hard not to notice the changes happening around you. However, he emphasized that the Aquaman world is its own separate universe and unaffected by external controversies.
The sequel has faced various challenges, including reshoots and changes in its release date. However, at present, Aquaman 2, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 20, 2023.
