Anurag Kashyap is a director known for his straightforwardness and honesty. Recently, he shared his thoughts on the new wave of stars in the OTT industry and how he has evolved as a director.
Kashyap admitted that when he was starting out, he had grand ambitions of changing the world through his films. However, he now believes that such changes happen naturally and that one should focus on their work rather than trying to force change.
The filmmaker also discussed his experience with the star system and the role of fan dynamics in the success or failure of films. He admitted that there was a time when he got caught up in chasing stars, thinking that working with them would guarantee success. However, he realized that stars come with certain expectations and if a filmmaker fails to cater to the star’s fan base, they can face backlash.
When asked about his films “No Smoking” and “Bombay Velvet,” which featured stars, Kashyap explained that if a filmmaker is not catering to the fan base while working with a star, they risk getting canceled. He emphasized that he prefers to make his own movies and not cater to anyone’s friends or fan base.
Although Kashyap acknowledged that working with superstars like Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan would bring more attention and success, he expressed his fear of dealing with the intense reactions of their fan bases. He mentioned how fans can turn against directors if they’re not satisfied with the film, citing examples of his own experiences.
Kashyap also acknowledged the rise of OTT platforms and how they have leveled the playing field by providing opportunities for actors like Pankaj Tripathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui to lead films. He believes that stars will always be admired, but the emergence of OTT stars has brought about a more equalized industry.
On the work front, Kashyap has upcoming acting projects in Tamil films “Leo” and “One 2 One.” His own directorial film, “Kennedy,” had a successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and has been making the rounds at various film festivals.
