Belarusian-Set Documentary ‘Mother Vera’ Secures Top Accolade, Winning Locarno’s Prestigious Creativity Media First Look Award
The Locarno festival’s industry section witnessed a momentous triumph as the documentary ‘Mother Vera’, set against the backdrop of Belarus, claimed the coveted Creativity Media First Look Award – a notable recognition accompanied by a substantial €50,000 ($55,000) cash prize. This esteemed award provides vital support for post-production services, ensuring the film’s successful completion. The documentary was co-directed by Cécile Embleton and Alys Tomlinson, with Laura Shacham serving as the producer.
The selection process was guided by the discerning eyes of the Locarno Pro jury, comprising esteemed figures like Ava Cahen (Artistic Director, La Semaine de la Critique Cannes), Gaia Furrer (Artistic Director, Giornate degli Autori), and Eugene Hernandez (Festival Director, Sundance Institute). Describing their choice, the jury expressed, “From the opening moments of this film, we were immediately drawn to the strikingly photographed stark portrait of a fascinating nun in Belarus who makes a journey to France. We congratulate filmmakers Cécile Embleton and Alys Tomlinson and wish them the best with this new film, Mother Vera.”
Cécile Embleton, a London-based filmmaker renowned for her impactful documentaries, collaborated with Alys Tomlinson, acclaimed for her internationally recognized photography. ‘Mother Vera’ delves into the captivating story of a young Orthodox nun navigating a profound internal struggle after two decades of monastic life. Her journey unfolds against the backdrop of her past and leads her towards liberation, propelled by the necessity to trust her instincts.
Among other noteworthy recognitions, ‘No Ifs Or Buts’ by Sarah Lewis, co-produced by DoBeDo, claimed both the Jannuzzi Smith Award and the Le Film Français Award, reaping appreciation for its remarkable design and insightful storytelling. The vibrant landscape of Locarno also witnessed the successful closure of the Alliance 4 Development platform, with ‘Pas Ta Maman’ by Michèle Flury emerging as the recipient of the Alphapanda Market Breakout Award, ushering the talented filmmaker into a realm of potential growth.
The Heritage Online Restoration Contest made a significant mark, celebrating the restoration of ‘Mulher de verdade’ (1954), directed by Alberto Cavalcanti. This accomplishment, undertaken by Cinegrell, heralds the revival of an iconic cinematic piece to be unveiled in the forthcoming Heritage Online section of the festival.
