In a thrilling showdown at the box office back in 2008, Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan went head-to-head with their iconic films, Iron Man and Batman: The Dark Knight. As the success of Oppenheimer currently delights fans, Downey has opened up about a warning he received when Iron Man was about to hit the screens.
Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark in Iron Man has left an indelible mark, while Nolan’s Midas touch has turned everything he touches into gold. Downey, now synonymous with Marvel’s poster boy, revealed how he stepped into the role just as Nolan was gearing up for a billion-dollar superhero film.
During an appearance on The Wired’s “The Web’s Most Searched Questions,” Nolan’s placard read, “How did Robert Downey Jr. become Iron Man?” Downey humorously replied, “It was god’s will,” but Nolan probed further, prompting Downey to share the story of his journey. He recounted his “pretty good screen test” and the shared desire with John Favreau to make an impact after their respective movies, ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ and ‘Zathura,’ faced setbacks at the box office. Both actors were hungry for a win.
Interestingly, Downey was warned about the imminent release of Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which proved to be a phenomenal success and earned critical acclaim. Downey revealed, “And when ‘Iron Man’ came out, everyone that knew me and loved me said, ‘This will do until ‘The Dark Knight’ comes out.”
Being forewarned about Christopher Nolan’s film was a testament to the filmmaker’s reputation for delivering nothing short of brilliance. The Dark Knight introduced Christian Bale as Batman and featured Heath Ledger’s legendary portrayal of the Joker. Although they clashed at the box office years ago, Downey and Nolan have once again impressed audiences with Oppenheimer, leaving fans eager for more cinematic masterpieces from the dynamic duo.
