There has been a great deal of debate surrounding the possible renaming of India as Bharat. Amitabh Bachchan reportedly showed his support for this decision through one of his tweets. Likewise, Akshay Kumar demonstrated his support by changing the title of his upcoming film to Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue. However, it is important to remember when the superstar broke his silence on religious controversies and stated that he only believes in being a nationalist. Read on for more details!
Despite facing criticism, Akshay has never hesitated to work on projects that he believes in. Whether it was Laxmii, which sparked controversy over its original title ‘Laxmmi Bomb’, or OMG and its theme of sex education, there has always been something for audiences to take away.
In his 2021 film Sooryavanshi, one of Akshay’s dialogues suggesting that he doesn’t believe in any religion but only in being Indian caused a lot of buzz. In response, Akshay Kumar told PTI, “I don’t believe in any religion. I only believe in being Indian, and that is what the film also portrays. The idea is to emphasize being Indian rather than focusing on being Parsi, Hindu, or Muslim. We didn’t approach it from a religious standpoint.”
Akshay Kumar clarified that there was no intention to vilify any specific religion in Sooryavanshi. “We make films with both negative and positive characters, and I am simply portraying a character. Every film has good and bad characters, and the audience is smart enough to decide what to take away from the film – the good or the bad,” he added.
Meanwhile, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding Akshay’s Canadian citizenship. On Independence Day, he responded to critics by providing proof of his Indian citizenship.
