Demi Lovato revealed that her song ‘Cool for the Summer’ was inspired by a woman she had a sexual relationship with. The singer explained that the raunchy lyrics of the track were what made her parents suspect her bisexuality. However, she chose not to disclose the identity of the person who inspired the song.
During an appearance on ‘The Howard Stern Show’, Lovato shared, “I was reflecting on my past experiences with a girl and decided to write this song. I wasn’t concerned about how it would impact my career, but rather I was coming to terms with my own identity. I didn’t officially come out as bisexual until I was in my mid-20s. Growing up in a Christian household made me apprehensive.”
She further discussed her parents’ reactions to her coming out, stating, “When I finally opened up about my sexuality, my dad wasn’t surprised. He mentioned that the song ‘Cool for the Summer’ gave it away. On the other hand, my mom simply wanted me to be happy.”
When asked if she would ever reveal the woman who inspired the song, Lovato coyly responded, “I am currently in a relationship, and I believe that it would be inappropriate to share that information.”
The show’s Robin Quivers jokingly compared the situation to Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’, asking who the song was about.
