Kate Winslet is praising young actresses for their fearlessness in the aftermath of the #MeToo movement. The 47-year-old ‘Titanic’ actress revealed that she had been criticized and mocked for speaking her mind in the past, but now feels that it was all worthwhile. In an interview with Vogue’s October 2023 issue, conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Winslet expressed her pride in the new generation of actresses.
“Oh, my God! This is the best part. Young actresses now, f*ck me, they are unafraid. It makes me so proud,” said Winslet. “And I think, Yes, all the s***-flinging, all the struggle, all the using my voice for years, often being finger-pointed at and laughed at – I don’t give a s***! It was all bloody worth it.”
Winslet acknowledged that the culture in the entertainment industry is changing in ways she couldn’t have imagined during her younger years. She believes that her experiences have toughened her up and given her a deep understanding of what it means to portray a character like Lee Miller, the troubled World War Two photographer she plays in her upcoming film ‘Lee’.
In the interview, Winslet also shared her frustrations about being patronized by male power players in the movie industry. She revealed instances where directors and potential male investors belittled her and questioned her worth. Some comments were downright insulting, such as when a director offered to fund her project in exchange for doing his film and referred to her endeavor as “little”.
Vogue’s October 2023 issue will be available on newsstands across the country starting from 19 September.
