Chrissie Hynde admits feeling “guilty” for the deaths of her bandmates in The Pretenders. She acknowledges that she did not discourage their drug-taking, which led to the untimely demise of Pete Farndon at the age of 30 in 1983 and James Honeyman-Scott at the age of 25 a year prior. Hynde expresses her guilt, stating that if one is truly guilty, they should admit it without hesitation. She reflects on her role in the drug culture but also acknowledges that she was not their mother and had her own personal struggles.
Hynde further reveals the challenges of replacing fallen band members and compares the current lineup to a Pretenders tribute band. The band continues to play together, with Hynde joined by bassist Nick Wilkinson, lead guitarist James Walbourne, pedal steel guitarist Eric Heywood, and keyboardist Carwyn Ellis.
Regarding drummer Martin Chambers, Hynde considers him a member of the band but expresses concerns about his ability to perform. She noticed his struggles during a tribute concert for late Foo Fighters star Taylor Hawkins, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 50. Hynde is nervous about putting Chambers back on the road due to his health issues and the tragic loss of Hawkins.
